Sevastopol from the Redan

Photograph of Sevastopol taken from the Redan. The view is of the Karabelnaya suburb of Sevastopol with the edge of the Redan Reoubt, made of wicker fencing and sandbags in the foreground. Planks of wood, cannonballs and other assorted debris litter the ground behind the walls. On the left in the middle ground, stands a wall made of limestone that surrounded the dry docks. The ravine on the right of the picture is the Middle Ravine and the Malakoff is off the picture on the right. The Great Barracks is also off the picture on the left.

This photograph was taken from the Russian defence line that ran north from the eastern facing side of the Redan. The British made two unsuccessful attacks on the Redan fortification, a Russian stronghold, during the Siege of Sevastopol. The siege eventually ended on the 8th September 1855 when the French captured the nearby Malakoff redoubt, forcing the Russians to abandon the city.
