1855

Albumen print | 22.0 x 34.3 cm (image) | RCIN 2500532

Photograph of Sevastopol taken from the front of Cathcart's Hill. In the foreground there is a small camp to the left and three men standing to the right. The man standing in the middle is pointing to the left. The town and harbour of Sevastopol can just be seen in the distance. Cathcart's Hill, named after the grave of General Cathcart, was the main cemetery for British soldiers killed during the Crimean War. It was also used as an observation point as from it commanders could view the progress of the Siege of Sevastopol.
