Photograph of the sanitarium at Balaklava. The sanitarium consists of a row of wooden huts along the ridge of the clifftop. Further along the ridge are the ruins of the old Genoese Castle. The harbour can be seen in the valley to the right, filled with tall ships. To the left is the sea.
The town of Balaklava was used as a base by the British during the Crimean War. The sanitarium was built at such a height to provide a healthy environment for the recuperating men.
