1855-1856Salted paper print | 24.3 x 28.7 cm (image) (image) | RCIN 2500736
Photograph of the huts of the Guards at Balaklava. In the foreground there is a group of tents and a soldier standing in front of a corrugated metal hut. Directly behind there are thirteen wooden huts in three rows. Beyond is the harbour with the buildings of the town across the water and a camp on the bank to the left. There is a large number of ships in the harbour and the old Genose Castle can be seen on hillside behind.
The town of Balaklava was used as a base by the British during the Crimean War. The troops engaged in the war camped in the countryside surrounding the town.
