Photograph of the interior of the Malakoff after its capture by the French. The edges of the redoubt are lined with roles of wicker fencing and sandbags. There are three cannons in the interior space with cannonballs and other debris on the ground around them. Hills can be seen in the distance.
The French, led by Maréchal Pélissier, captured the Malakoff redoubt on the 8th September 1855. It had been one of the key Russian defences during the Siege of Sevastopol and its fall effectively ended the siege. The Russians abandoned the city that evening.
