Tower of the Malakoff

Photograph of the tower of the Malakoff after its capture by the French. The photograph shows a stone wall with piles of earth and rubble in front of it. There is a pile of logs in the middle and sections of wicker fencing gathered in a pile to the right. On top of the stone wall there is a small wooden hut and a tent, with a soldier standing to the right with a gun. The French, led by Maréchal Pélissier, captured the Malakoff redoubt on the 8th September 1855. It had been one of the key Russian defences during the Siege of Sevastopol and its fall effectively ended the siege. The Russians abandoned the city that evening.
