Photograph of the old Genoese Castle in Balaklava. The ruins of the castle are spread over the hillside in the foreground to the left. There are a number of ships moored in the harbour to the right and there is a steep hill on the other side of the water. The Genoese controlled Balaklava in the mediaeval period. During the Crimean War the town was used as a base by the British.
