Photograph of Balaklava. In the foreground to the right there is a ruined stone tower, part of the old Genoese Castle. The buildings of the town are laid out behind with the harbour to the left, filled to capacity with tall ships.
The town of Balaklava was used as a base by the British during the Crimean War. Supplies arrived by ship into the small harbour and were transported by rail to troops engaged in the Siege of Sevastopol.
