Captain Goodlake served during the Crimean War with the Coldstream Guards and was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at the Battle of Inkerman.

Caption in pencil in a 19th century hand on the mount, below the photograph, reads 'Capt Goodlake Gds'. The same photograph in the Library of Congress collection is identified as Major Chapman.
