Captain Henry William Verschoyle

Captain Verschoyle joined the Grenadier Guards in April 1851 and served in all of the major battles of the Crimean War including the Siege of Sebastopol. During the Battle of Inkermann he was praised for carrying his regimental colours when surrounded by the enemy, and he was later wounded in the trenches on the 5th September 1855. Captain Verschoyle was an exhibiting member of the London Photographic Society alongside his mother Catherine Verschoyle, who had been one of its earliest members. His son, Captain Edward Greville Verschoyle, was killed in the Boer War.
