Photograph of a three-quarter length portrait of Maria Sayer, later Mrs William Chaine (1837-1915). Sayer stands facing halfway to the left. She places both hands on the back of a chair. She wears a dark colour dress, white shirt and ribbon necklace with pendant. Maria Sayerr was the daughter of Sir Charles Beaumont Phipps, Private Secretary to Queen Victoria. She was first married to Captain Frederick Sayer. As a widow she married again to Lieutenant-Colonel William Chaine. She became Keeper of the State Apartments at Kensington Palace
