La Duchesse d'Istria

1874 after an original of 1860

Albumen print | 9.1 x 5.8 cm (image) | RCIN 2914058

Photograph of a full length portrait of a woman, captioned as 'Duchesse d'Istria', who may be Dora d'Istria, the pen name of duchess Helena Koltsova-Massalskaya, a Romanian writer with many works published in French. The Musee d'Orsey has another copy, identified as the Duchesse d'Isly, possibly Leonie Bugeaud de la Piconnerie d'Isly (1825-89).

The lady is standing, facing slightly towards the left. She turns her head towards the camera and gazes towards the right. She places her right hand on a plinth positioned beside her and holds a pair of gloves in her left hand.
