View from the Moritzkirche at Coburg

Jun 1857

Albumen print | 18.1 x 24.3 cm (image) | RCIN 2932758

Photograph of a rooftop view of the town of Coburg, Germany, taken from the top of the Moritz church. The town square is visible below.

A handwritten note has been pasted into the album in front of the photograph: 'These views of Coburg were taken by a resident photographer. Mr Bedford has supplied four views from nearly the same spot to replace the faded impressions'. The photograph is pasted onto the album page, with the handwritten inscription: 'View from the Moritzkirche at Coburg' (June 1857)'. Underneath the Bedford photograph there is evidence of an earlier caption handwritten on the mount, which was presumably for the photograph by the 'resident' photographer whose work had started to fade and so was replaced by Bedford's views.
