Ramsgate
c. 1863Albumen print | 13.9 x 19.8 cm (image) | RCIN 2932788
Photograph showing a street in Ramsgate, by the harbour. On the right are houses, hotels and shops, with people walking on the pavement. On the left are ships, horses and carts. In the middle distance are four- and five-storey buildings.
Before her accession to the throne, Queen Victoria had spent two holidays at Ramsgate with her mother, the Duchess of Kent, and their suite. The Princess enjoyed her holiday, particularly as her uncle, King Leopold I of the Belgians, and his wife, Queen Louise, joined the party. While while there she became seriously unwell with an illness which may have been either typhoid or severe tonsillitis, and was unable to return to Kensington Palace until January 1836. She and her mother spent another holiday at Ramsgate in the autumn of 1836. This photograph is almost certainly one of the four views of Ramsgate supplied to Queen Victoria in 1861 by Lake Price.
