This is one of a set of views of Edinburgh made by Ross & Thomson in 1849 and sent to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as 'Calotype Specimens'. James Ross and John Thomson were subsequently granted a Royal Warrant as 'Photographers at Edinburgh to Her Majesty' on 14 June 1849.
