Albumen print | 20.0 x 16.7 cm (image) | RCIN 2932768

Photograph of a seated idol, raised on a platform and looking down. The figure is flanked by five smaller deities that are arranged behind the central goddess with a wooden frame over them that forms part of a building. In the foreground are a variety of plant pots. The photograph was taken in Canton, now Guangzhou.

The title indicates the goddess depicted is of fecundity or fertility.

The photograph was probably taken in 1858-59 by Pierre Rossier, who was sent to Canton by the firm Negretti and Zambra. They published a set of 50 photographs in November 1859 of views in and around Canton.
