Memorial works

Following Albert’s premature death, Victoria commissioned the creation of photographs and decorative objects that memorialised her beloved husband

AFTER GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)

The Albert Cairn, Balmoral

1883 after an 1864 original

Carbon print | 8.2 x 7.0 cm (image) | RCIN 2620014

Photograph of the memorial tablet on the cairn dedicated to Albert, Prince Consort on top of Creag An Lurachain on the Balmoral estate. The cairn is built using square granite blocks.

The cairn bears an inscription which reads: To the Beloved Memory of Prince Albert, the Great and Good Prince Consort, Erected by his Broken-hearted Widow, VICTORIA R' A smaller plaque underneath the main dedication tablet quotes verses 13 and 14 from The Wisdom of Solomon and reads: 'He being made perfect in a short time, Fulfilled a long time, for his soul pleased the Lord. Therefore hasted he to take him away from the Wicked.' George Washington Wilson took a number of views, both close to and at a distance from the cairn; the latter to show the cairn in context on the hillside. This photograph is a later carbon copy of the original albumen photograph. Carbon was a process that was less susceptible to fading, unlike an albumen print that is prone to discolouration over time.
