Photograph of a view of Craig Lurachain on the Balmoral Estate. The hill is located in the distant background. A the top the hill, barely visible, is the Prince Albert Cairn. In the middle ground is the River Dee. There is a metal fence running horizontally across the foreground.
The cairn was built in memory of Prince Albert (1819-61) in 1862, following his death in December 1861. The tablet on the cairn reads 'To the beloved memory of Albert, the great and good Prince Consort, erected by his broken hearted widow, Victoria R, 21st August 1862.' This photograph is a later carbon copy of the original albumen photograph. Carbon was a process that was less susceptible to fading, unlike an albumen print that is prone to discolouration over time.
