Memorial works

Following Albert’s premature death, Victoria commissioned the creation of photographs and decorative objects that memorialised her beloved husband

AFTER GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)

Balmoral Castle, on the west terrace

1883 after 1863 original

Carbon print | 8.1 x 7.0 cm (image) | RCIN 2620005

Photograph of a view of the west terrace of Balmoral Castle. The castle is located in the background, on the far left of the photograph. In the foreground is a sculpture of a boar, seated, facing left. Behind the boar, in the middle ground, is a sculpture of a deer, similarly seated and facing left. The sculptures are surrounded by shrubbery.

This photograph is an 1883 carbon copy of the original albumen photograph. Carbon was a process that was less susceptible to fading, unlike an albumen print that is prone to discolouration over time.
