Winchester Cathedral : Bishop Fox's Tomb, Lady Chapel

Photograph of the interior of Winchester Cathedral, showing the south presbytery aisle. In the centre of the photograph stands an iron gate and to the right is the chantry chapel of Bishop Foxe featuring Gothic architectural ornamentation. Bishop Richard Foxe (1448-1528) served as Bishop of Exeter, Wells, Bath, Durham and Winchester between 1501 until his death in 1528. He was also King Henry VII's secretary of State and attended at the King's death in 1509. His tomb features the effigy of a decaying cadaver which serves as a 'memento mori' or remembrance of death in the eyes of the living. This photograph is one of a series of photographs of Cathedrals that Wilson produced between 1861 and 1863.
