Technological improvements enabled Prince Albert to collect photographs of places that were significant to him

AFTER GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)

The Thames at Woolwich

1883 after an original of c.1861

Carbon print | 7.9 x 7.4 cm (image) | RCIN 2320194

Photograph of a sailing boat moored on the mud at the side of the River Thames in the foreground. In the middle distance, two smaller sailing boats flank a larger, clipper like vessel with tall sails in the background. In the far background stand buildings, possibly the Royal Arsenal.

This photograph is a later carbon copy which is a process that is less susceptible to light damage, unlike the original albumen photograph that was prone to fading over time.
