Photograph of the Windsor Castle curtain wall, along Thames Street in Windsor. The (old) Curfew Tower features on the far left side of the photograph. There are trees against the castle, piles of stones and debris, and fences. The Garter Tower was at this date in very poor condition.
In 1856 the Prince Consort planned to restore the curtain walls and the Garter and Curfew Towers. He appointed Anthony Salvin for this work. Salvin decided to remodel the Curfew Tower in the style of Viollet-le-Duc's design for the restoration of Tour du Tresor at Carcassonne. The first stage was completed in 1863.
