Photograph of the construction of the new Balmoral castle during the spring of 1854. There is rubble in the left of the foreground and building tools in the right of the background.

The partnership of George Washington Wilson and John Hay made three visits to Balmoral Castle in March, July and October of 1854 to photograph the construction of the new castle, the foundation stone for which was laid on the 23rd September 1853 and to photograph the old castle prior to its demolition in late 1854.
