Photograph of the construction of the new Balmoral Castle, Aberdeenshire. A workman's ladder leans, propped against a doorway and the roof is in the latter stages of completion. Building material surrounds the site and a wooden fence is in the foreground.

The partnership of George Washington Wilson and John Hay made three visits to Balmoral Castle in March, July and October of 1854 to photograph the construction of the new castle, the foundation stone for which was laid on the 23rd September 1853 and to photograph the old castle prior to its demolition in late 1854.
