Photograph of the construction of the new Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire. The house, which is in an advanced state of construction, is surrounded by building material. The whole site is surrounded by a wire fence. Two wooden sheds flank the main castle.

The partnership of George Washington Wilson and John Hay made three visits to Balmoral Castle in March, July and October of 1854 to photograph the construction of the new castle, the foundation stone for which was laid on the 23rd September 1853 and to photograph the old castle prior to its demolition in late 1854.
