Technological improvements enabled Prince Albert to collect photographs of places that were significant to him
'Entrance to Royal Hospital, Dublin'
c.1880 after an original of c.1860Carbon print | 7.6 x 7.3 cm (image) | RCIN 2320085
Photograph of the entrance to the Royal Hospital, Dublin. A number of people, including soldiers and a child, stand outside the entrance.
The Royal Hospital was founded in 1684. The building now houses the Irish Museum of Modern Art.
A carbon copy is adhered on top of the original albumen print. Carbon prints are more stable compared to albumen prints, the latter prone to fading. Carbon copies were therefore created for posterity.
