Technological improvements enabled Prince Albert to collect photographs of places that were significant to him

GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)

Durham Cathedral - The Nave

c. 1861

Albumen print | 7.8 x 7.3 cm (image) | RCIN 2320237

Photograph of the nave of Durham Cathedral looking towards the rose window. Two boys stand against a pillar on the left of the aisle. The nave in Durham cathedral was completed in 1135 and features one of the earliest examples of pointed arched roofs in the world. This permitted a higher roof space of 73 feet and more width measuring 81 feet. By placing the two figures in the foreground, Wilson helps to convey a sense of the space and majesty that this interior view of the cathedral provided.
