GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)
Bridge over the Falls of Garbhalt
Sep 1857Albumen print | 19.8 x 24.8 cm (image) | RCIN 2160041
Photograph of the Garbh Allt Falls running over rocks and boulders and between trees on the either side. In the background stands a bridge with a single arch. In the centre of the photograph is a small, kilted figure in centre fishing.
In 1857 Wilson was producing work that was of a larger size to those photographs that he had taken the previous year. There is a possibility that Wilson was influenced by Roger Fenton who was producing views of the same region but in a larger size in 1856; however, by September of 1857, Wilson was keen to utilise his artistic eye and skills of composition to produce these striking images of the Scottish landscape. This particular image was reproduced as an etching in 'Leaves from the Journal of Our Life in the Highlands' to illustrate the journals written by Queen Victoria when she was resident at Balmoral.
