ATTRIBUTED TO? GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)

Balmoral Castle (North side)

Sep 1855

Salted paper print | 22.2 x 27.8 cm (image) | RCIN 2140234

Photograph showing the north side of the new Balmoral Castle with the construction of the clock tower, centre left, taking place in the background.

Construction of the new Balmoral Castle was completed in 1856 upon which the old castle was demolished. Wilson and Hay were commissioned to record the construction of the new castle, but the partnership was dissolved in December 1854 following the bankruptcy of the Hay family business, after which Wilson operated as an independent photographer. Wilson was present in Balmoral for 13 days in September 1855 when he was commissioned to take portraits of the Royal Family to mark the engagement of Princess Victoria to Prince Frederick William of Prussia.
