GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)
Balmoral Castle from the North West
c. 1859Albumen print | 7.8 x 7.1 cm (image) | RCIN 2320226
Photograph of an exterior view of Balmoral Castle as viewed through trees. The castle clock tower stands on the left with the porte-cochere partially visible on the right of the building. In the foreground stands a wrought iron bench and a little beyond, a man in left side profile, who is seated with his back against a tree.
There are several versions of this view of the castle that were taken by Wilson that feature a man in the foreground to add scale to the composition. In some of the photographs, the man is different, but it is possible that William Gellie who was employed as Wilson's assistant, was asked to pose for the photographs when he accompanied the photographer on his trips to England and Scotland.
