FRANCIS BEDFORD (1815-94)

Works of Art Exhibited at Marlborough House, 1854: Silver Chasing

1854

Albumen print | 10.9 x 11.8 cm (image) | RCIN 2800169

Photograph of a circular silver plaque, decorated with a laurel leaf border. The plaque depicts Actaeon, shown in the foreground on the far left, during his transformation into a stag as punishment for spying on the goddess Atermis as she bathed. The deity is shown towards  the centre of the image, in a pond, accompanied by other female figures.

In middle ground, Actaeon as a stag is killed by his own hounds. Classical ruins, a town and a river between mountains are visible in the background.
