1854Albumen print | 13.8 x 19.0 cm (image) | RCIN 2800215
Photograph of a carved marble relief depicting a youth in classical armour seated on a chariot drawn by two horses. He carries a salamander in his left hand. Behind him, standing on a plinth at the back of the chariot, a naked Apollo leans forward and crowns the seated youth with a wreath of laurels, holding it above his head. In front of the youth stands a female figure, Fame, holding a torch in her right and the reins of the horses in her left. On the far right, in front of the procession, a youth in classical armour stands, carrying a banner in his left hand. The figures are set against a background portraying a hill with trees, on the left, and a building. On the upper edge, at the centre, Jupiter is represented as a bearded male figure in half-length holding a thunderbolt in his left hand and pointing towards the chariot with his right. Beneath him is an eagle holding a scroll in his claws.
The work depicted is currently held by the Victoria and Albert Museum.
