1857Albumen print | 20.6 x 17.6 cm (image) | RCIN 2081437
Photograph of the painting 'Pietà', part of an altarpiece by Carlo Crivelli (d.1495). The deceased Christ is located at the centre of the work. The Virgin Mary, on the left, holds the body of Christ and weeps. Christ is being lowered into a coffin by two saints who show obvious signs of grief.
At the time of the photograph, the painting was in the collection of William Ward, 1st Earl of Dudley (1817-85). The work is now held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Part of the original altarpiece, 'The Demidoff Altarpiece', is held by the National Gallery, London.
