GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)
[Upper] Falls of the Garravalt [sic]
c. 1859Albumen print | 7.4 x 6.8 cm (image) | RCIN 2117170
Photograph of the Upper Falls of the Garbh-Allt river situated in the Ballochbuie Forest. A small waterfall flows over rocks. The image is framed by tree branches on the top and sides.
It was during a visit to photograph the falls of the Garbh-Allt that his friend and companion, George Walker suggested Wilson take his photograph four feet further away where he would 'surround the view with an arch of greenery, which would at least fill-up the vacant space in the foreground.. and the idea of the relative distance of the objects depicted came most vividly out.' This would enhance the 3 dimensional effect when viewed through a stereoscope.
