The Old Gardener Simpson at Corbie Hall (Abergeldie) and his wife

Oct 1857

Albumen print | 11.2 x 9.0 cm (image) | RCIN 2160320

Photograph of an elderly couple seated on a bench which is set in the middle of a pathway with bushes on either side at Corbie Hall. Mrs Simpson sits alongside her husband, Mr Simpson, who wears a cap and has his arms folded in front of him. Mrs Simpson wears a bonnet, tartan shawl and long skirt. Both subjects face the viewer. The name of the photographer at the bottom right of the print is incorrectly spelt and should be spelt as 'Pearce'.

Queen Victoria made a number of visits to see Mr and Mrs Simpson in their home at Corbie Hall. On one such visit, Queen Victoria writes in her journal how she and Princess Helena drove out to see the people who lived on the estate, including Mrs Simpson. The Queen records: 'Old Mrs Simpson hoped she might live 'another year' to see us again.' RA VIC/MAIN/QVJ (W) 25th October 1865
