Photograph of a three-quarter length portrait of Sir Howard Crawfurd Elphinstone (1829-90), when a Major, standing, facing towards the camera. He turns his head halfway to the left and gazes ahead. He wears a military uniform and holds a plumed helmet in his right hand and a sabre in his left. A selection of medals are pinned to his chest.

Colour has been applied to the Major's cheeks.
