Photograph of John Brown (Senior), father of John Brown, seated in an armchair. He is dressed in a dark suit and an open book is placed on his knees that he rests his hands on. Queen Victoria visited the farm known as 'The Bush' where John Brown's parents lived on the 3rd October 1856: 'I rode with Princess Alice (1843-78) & Bessie Wellington, across to the other side, up Alt Craigie to the "Bush" [of Crathienaird] a farm where John Brown's father lives, & here we got off for a moment & went into the Kitchen. Saw Mrs Brown [Margaret neé Leys, 1799-1876], the mother, a big stout woman spin & took some very good oatcake and cheese. The farm is fairly large with cattle and sheep.'
