GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)

Balmoral Castle from the North

c. 1862

Albumen print | 10.2 x 16.3 cm (image) | RCIN 2160354

Photograph of Balmoral Castle as viewed from the north. In the foreground is rocky scrubland. Just in front of the castle is the River Dee, bordered by trees. This photograph is typical of the picturesque album prints that Wilson was producing during the first half of the 1860's. Wilson re-visited many of the views that had proved popular to the public in earlier years. The enduring popularity of these views strengthened his status as one of Scotland's most successful commercial photographers.
