GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823-93)

Balmoral Castle

c. 1860

Albumen print | 10.2 x 7.9 cm (image) | RCIN 2117193

Photograph of Balmoral Castle from the north west as seen through trees that stand in the foreground. The castle's clock tower stands on the left and the porte cochere on the right. Stone steps lead up a slope to the upper gardens. A man standing in left side profile, leans against one of the trees that stands in the centre. On the left is a wrought iron bench.

There are several versions of this view of the castle that were taken by Wilson that feature a man in the foreground to add scale to the composition. In some of the photographs, the man is different, but it is possible that William Gellie who was employed as Wilson's assistant, was asked to pose for the photographs when he accompanied the photographer on his trips to England and Scotland. This photograph is typical of the album print that Wilson introduced in the autumn of 1863. These were often taken from one half of a stereoscopic negative that Wilson already had in his collection which omitted the need to re-photograph a scene.
