WILSON & HAY (ACTIVE 1853-55)

The Queen's Pony "Craig Leadh" and John Brown

Sep 1854Oct 1854

Salted paper print | 15.2 x 15.5 cm (image) | RCIN 2160321

Photograph from an album of John Brown (1826-83) standing, facing three-quarters to the left and wearing a kilt and Glengarry hat. He stands alongside 'Craig Leadh', Queen Victoria's white pony, within the grounds of Balmoral. In the background is a wooden slatted fence and birch trees.

It is probable that this portrait was taken by the partnership of George Washington Wilson and John Hay who were commissioned to record the building of the new Balmoral Castle in the spring of 1854. By the end of the year, and with works on the Castle almost complete, the duo were asked to photograph the keepers and Jagers who accompanied the Prince Consort during the hunting of deer on the Balmoral estate.
