SIR DOMINIC COLNAGHI (1834-1908)
Letter from Dominic Colnaghi to Dr. Ernst Becker concerning drawings by (or after) Raphael in his possession or sold by him.
26 Oct 1858Loose manuscript paper; mounted | 1 document (4 pages) (whole object) | RA VIC/ADDA10/85/34
Colnaghi writes that he is awaiting from Paris copies of Wicar's drawings after Raphael. He lists six drawings (to which the copies presumably relate), which are or were in his possession: a large, damaged cartoon showing the victory of David over Goliath which he still has; a portait of Raphael's sister and a study of the head of St John, both sold to Mr Boulton MP, of Soho; a study of the 'Madonna di Foligno' sold to Mr H. Vaughan; a study of two men and Jacob's Dream, both sold to the Rev. Dr. Wellesley. He adds that Captain Stirling of Knightsbridge now owns the 'Madonna with the Child' standing. Finally, he states that he is sending for Becker's inspection a volume of woodcuts which includes several 'imitations after Raphael'; the owner asks 10 guineas for the volume.
Boulton was probably Matthew Boulton (1728-1809), founder of the Soho Mint, or his son or grandson, although none appears to have been an MP.
