The Virgin and Child ('The Colonna Madonna')

Prince Albert gave this porcelain copy of Raphael’s famed Colonna Madonna to his wife as a present for Christmas 1858. According to Queen Victoria, during the illness that culminated in Albert’s untimely death at the age of 42, her husband took great consolation in looking at this reproduction of his favourite Raphael. The back of the plaque bears the inscription: 'The Prince consort’s favorite picture 1861.'
