Queen Victoria received this bust of Raphael as a 28th birthday present from Prince Albert on 24 May 1847. It was one of a set of 12 bronze statues from the antique that Albert gave to his wife. The statues had not arrived in time for the birthday morning, and according to Victoria the Prince was 'in despair' at their absence. Happily they arrived later in the day, and the Queen thought them ’most beautiful'.
