LUIGI CERONI (ACTIVE 1855-72)

A portrait of Guidobaldo da Montefeltro

published 1851

Etching | 19.4 x 13.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850130

An etching after a portrait that was formerly ascribed to Giovanni Santi (Raphael's father) now in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Madrid (inv. no. 319), where it is attributed to Piero della Francesca. Lettered with the title. Signed by the printmaker with publication details and the attribution of the painting to Giovanni Santi. Published in Dennistoun's "Memoirs of the Dukes of Urbino, Illustrating the Arms, Arts, and Literature of Italy" (1851, plate XII). See RCIN 1024382 for the book. Trimmed within the platemark. Annotated on the verso.

Both the identity of the sitter and the attribution of the painting have been largely debated: traditionally believed to be a portrait of Raphael, the sitter has now been identified with Guidobaldo di Montefeltro on the basis of similarities with a medal depicting Guidobaldo by Francesco di Giorgio (dated 1483). See RCINs 850131 and 850132 for photographs of a medal depicting Guidobaldo. See Bibliographic References for further information.
