? GILLES ANTOINE DEMARTEAU (1750-1802)

A portrait of a young man, formerly supposed to be Raphael

c.1790-1805

Crayon-manner engraving | 54.5 x 41.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850094

A crayon-manner engraving after a painting now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.613). Signed by the printmakers and the intermediate draughtsman; lettered with the title, which identifies Raphael as the sitter. It is not clear whether the signature 'A. Demarteau' refers to Gilles Antoine Demarteau. Trimmed within the platemark.

The painting has long been attributed to Raphael, an opinion also shared by Ruland (1876) but no longer accepted by modern scholars. The names of Parmigianino and Correggio have been recently suggested. See Bibliographic References for further information. A photograph of the painting at RCIN 852043.
