PANNIER, JACQUES ETIENNE (1802-1869)

A portrait of a young man, formerly supposed to be Raphael

c.1825-1869

Engraving | 23.3 x 18.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850093

An engraving after a painting now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.613). Signed by the printmaker; lettered with the attribution of the painting to Raphael, title and publication details.

The painting has long been attributed to Raphael, an opinion also shared by Ruland (1876) but no longer accepted by modern scholars. The names of Parmigianino and Correggio have been recently suggested. See Bibliographic References for further information. A photograph of the painting at RCIN 852043.
