Prince Consort's statue unveiling
Memorialising Albert

Prince Albert's lasting influence can be seen in many mediums

JOSEPH VON KELLER (1811-73)

[Prince Albert]

1863

Engraving with Etching | 59.7 x 44.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 605878

This print of Prince Albert shows him standing holding a letter in his right hand, with his left hand resting beside a rolled paper, hat and rose. The engraving includes a facsimile of Prince Albert's signature, coat of arms and English inscription below, including the publisher's address, 'Published by John Mitchell; Bookseller & Publisher to Her Majesty and Their Royal Highnesses, The Prince and Princess of Wales, 33, Old Bond Street, London.'

The posthumously produced engraving is after an earlier photographic portrait of Prince Albert by Frances Sally Day, made at Osborne in 1859. It was one of the most popular engravings published after Albert's death. The Art Journal described the engraving as

unquestionably the best memorial the Queen's loving and loyal subjects can possess of one whose loss the nation still deplores
