The plans for the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore were started in the days following Prince Albert's death in December 1861. The foundation stone was laid by Queen Victoria in March 1862 and the Mausoleum consecrated in December 1862. The decoration however, was not not fully completed for another ten years. Queen Victoria regularly visited the Mausoleum and her body was placed alongside that of her husband after her death in January 1901.
