Holy Families & Madonna and Child

GUSTAVE LEVY (1819-94)

The Virgin and Child with two Angels [‘The Madonna of the Candelabra’]

c.1839-1876

Etching and engraving | 50.6 x 39.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850965

An engraving after the so-called ‘Madonna of the Candelabra’, a circular painting now in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (inv. no.37.484), the attribution of which is still debated. Lettered with the title and production details.

The execution of the painting is generally ascribed to the workshop of Raphael, with the master’s role in the invention of the composition being questioned. Ruland (1876) attributed the painting to Raphael and listed it as being then in the possession of the late Mr Hugh Andres Johnstone Munro of Novar (Scotland).

Showing the Virgin supporting the Christ Child who sits on a cushion, with two angels holding candelabra at either side.
