Holy Family with the Infant Baptist ['The Virgin with the Long Thigh']

A print reproducing a composition known as 'The Virgin with the Long Thigh', generally associated with paintings designed by Raphael between 1518-20 on the theme of the 'Sacra Famiglia' and executed by his workshop. Only state. Signed with engraver's empty tablet at lower left. The composition was also engraved by Marco Dente (see RCINs 851287, 851288). A related drawing (probably a copy after the engraving by Marco Dente, or after the original design by Raphael) is now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.3948). The print shows the full-length Virgin, seated on the ground with her left leg stretched out, supporting the Christ Child who sits on His cradle and reaches for the scroll presented to Him by the Infant Baptist, who kneels down at left; behind him is St Joseph looking on, with a donkey at his side; a male figure is partially hidden among ruins at right; against architectural background.
