Holy Families & Madonna and Child

CHARLES CLIFFORD (1819-62)

Holy Family with Saints

after 1853

Albumen print | 18.4 x 15.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851052

A photograph of a painting formerly in the Escorial in Spain (according to an annotation in the master copy of Ruland's Raphael Collection catalogue kept in the Print Room at Windsor Castle). Not included in Ruland (1876).

The composition of the painting is derived from the so-called ‘Holy Family of Francis I’, a painting attributed to Raphael and his workshop (1518) now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.604). In the photographed painting, the angels are replaced by the figures of St Anne and Zachariah (?). A photograph of the ‘Holy Family of Francis I’ can be found at RCIN 851028.

Showing the full-length Virgin supporting the Christ Child stepping out of His cradle; with St Joseph behind her on the right, and the crouched St Elizabeth supporting the Young John the Baptist who clasps his hands in adoration on the left; with St Anne (?) between the two Holy women and St Zachariah (?) standing behind the group on the left.
